INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: EVOLUTION FOR RESILIENCE

Explore the evolution of Vietnam’s shrimp sector and its pivotal role in driving economic growth and rural development

INDUSTRY EVOLUTION

Vietnam's shrimp sector transitioned rapidly from traditional 1940s extensive coastal ponds to the dynamic P. monodon boom of the 1990s. The introduction of P. vannamei in the early 2000s marked a critical structural shift, laying the groundwork for today's modern, high-density cultivation.

PRODUCTION MODELS

Production models heavily depend upon investment capability of shrimp farmers. Spanning extensive mangrove systems to high-tech super-intensive units, Vietnam's cultivation landscape offers highly diverse risk-return profiles. Understanding each operational model helps maximize yield potentials.

RISK PERCEPTION & ANALYSIS

Risk perception remains low across the sector, with success often attributed to fortune rather than systems. In practice, long-term yield hinges on structured risk management. Operators who systematically identify and mitigate operational hazards position themselves for superior financial stability.

TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION

Shrimp farmers are inherently innovative. Facing continuous operational challenges, they frequently test novel technologies, products and management practices. Long-term profitability favors those who evaluate innovations methodically and adopt tools based on sound evidence, and optimize through experience.

OUR INDUSTRY PARTNERS

We are supporting our partners and their clients to strengthen the resilience of Vietnam Shrimp Industry, prioritizing product quality and sustainability!

Binh Minh Capital (BMC) is leading the production of domesticated shrimp postlarvae in Vietnam, especially for the black tiger shrimp - Penaeus monodon. BMC is supplying over 3.0 billion postlarvae annually to its Shrimp Farmers Network of 57,000+ farmers in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam.
Green Guard engineers and produces functional probiotics to de-risk shrimp farming and maximize profit. Its products have been proven to enable reliable productivity of 40 - 60 tons/ha/crop for P. vannamei and 18 - 20 tons/ha/crop for P. monodon both in Vietnam and a few other countries.
Mekong Tomland was the initial name of Tomland. The company was established in 2013 mainly to develop semi-biofloc technology for super-intensive shrimp farming, to design TOMBOOK - a digital platform for modern shrimp farming and to introduce new lines of domesticated P. vannamei broodstock to Vietnam.
